The world of UW takes place approximately 100-200 years after some sort of apocalyptic event. I don't plan on ever specifying what that event was as it matters little at this point in time and isn't meant to be a major plot device or shape RP at all. All that matters is that something happened that fundamentally changed the world for the worse, and life had to adapt to it. Feral cats these days depend on proximity to humans to attract prey such as mice and rats and also for protection from the predators that roam the wilderness. Most predators will not enter cities, preferring to avoid humans unless they're desperate, and so living in the city around humans is generally safer for a cat than living out in the wild.
Resources are scarce in this new world, especially for humans, though at least their numbers were decimated in the event that changed the world, making it easier for those that remained to survive on what was left. At this point they have restored electricity to some places, but there is no widespread electricity or communication and nature has reclaimed much of the planet. Some wild animals that were previously kept in zoos managed to escape and survive, making the wilderness quite a dangerous place.
Most humans have returned to a hunter/gatherer type of life, and when it comes to food, often anything is on the menu. That includes cats. Some humans will keep cats because they are decent hunters and sometimes bring back food for them, and because they keep pest populations low which helps to keep diseases from spreading, but just as often a human will trap and eat a cat instead. Kittypets in this new world are very rarely the soft creatures they were before the world changed. They are usually at least decent hunters and can often hold their own in a fight as well.
